Biggio Announces Retirement

By Chris Price

In a copyrighted story in the Houston Chronicle, Craig Biggio announced he will retire from the Houston Astros and Major League Baseball at the end of the current season.

Most sportswriters who cover the Astros knew this day was coming. However it is still a blow that will send ripples through the Astros' organization for quite some time.

We will have further comments and commentary on this story later. In the meantime, below is the article from the Houston Chronicle.

Craig Biggio feels he has nothing left to prove on a baseball field. After a 20-year career in which he stayed with one franchise, played multiple positions at an All-Star level and joined the elite 3,000 hit club, the Houston Astros infielder said Tuesday he will retire at the end of this season.

"There are a lot of guys that have the game taken away from them by injury," he said. "For me to be able to walk away now, on top, on my own accord, I'm very happy with that. I'm in a good place. I think I've done everything that I was supposed to do on a baseball field. I have nothing to be disappointed about."

During a news conference in which he reminisced about his accomplished career, Biggio said his favorite baseball memory always will be from this June 28.

"The 3,000th-hit night was the best. I'll never forget that," he said. "I just can't believe it's over. It's gone by fast. I have no regrets. I played the game the right way."

Biggio is batting .250 with 24 doubles, six homers and 35 RBIs this season. He has 3,016 hits, four shy of tying Rafael Palmeiro for 23rd place.

A teary-eyed Biggio, the longest-tenured player in Astros history, said he will miss putting on his uniform every day and also will miss the fans.

"I just didn't want families bringing their kids to the game and saying, `He's just not the same guy we used to watch or the guy we really love and respect.' I didn't want that. I didn't want to be a player that played the game too long," he said.

Along with teammate and friend Jeff Bagwell, who retired before the start of this season, Biggio led the Astros to four division titles, the team's first NL pennant and trip to the World Series in 2005.

Moises Alou played three seasons with Biggio, in 1998 and 2000-2001.

"It doesn't surprise me because I know how hard he plays, how sore his body must be," said Alou, now with the New York Mets. "It was a great experience playing with him, I'm very happy to have an opportunity to play with him."

Biggio's 3,000th hit came one day shy of the 19th anniversary of his first career hit, a single off Orel Hershiser on June 29, 1988.

Biggio is the only player in major league history with 600 doubles, 250 homers, 3,000 hits and 400 steals. Biggio is a career .282 hitter. He has already been inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

A seven-time All-Star, Biggio starred at Seton Hall and was the 22nd player selected in the 1987 amateur draft. He caught his first four seasons.

He made his first All-Star game in 1991, but the Astros moved him to second base in 1992, a position he had never played. But he made the All-Star team again, ranking among the NL's top 10 in runs, walks and stolen bases.
A

fter the Astros acquired Jeff Kent in 2002, Biggio moved to the outfield. When Kent left in 2004, Biggio returned to second.

"Moving to different positions definitely extended my survival rate," Biggio said.

Biggio considered leaving Houston when he became a free agent in 1995 and had an offer from Colorado. Astros owner Drayton McLane said he called Biggio every day for three weeks to persuade him to stay.

McLane said Biggio and Bagwell were the heartbeat of the Astros franchise. He commended Biggio for his intensity, his thrill to win and his desire to reach out to the fans.

"Craig, thanks for the thousands and thousands of memories," he said. "We'll be a better franchise because of the years that you were here."

Astros general manager Tim Purpura said Biggio and Bagwell set high standards for the franchise.

"Craig and Jeff have given us this legacy. And now we have to pass it on to the next generation of Astros," he said.

Biggio, his wife, Patty, and their three children live in Houston. He thanked his family at the news conference. His two sons sat next to him while his wife was in the audience.

"I can't justify being out of their lives any more. I want to be home," he said.

Biggio said he will be a part of the Astros organization but his first priority will be to spend time with his family and help coach his two sons in baseball.

During his two decades with the Astros, Biggio has become known in the city as much for his charitable work as for his play. He has been the national spokesman and fundraiser for the Sunshine Kids Foundation, which helps children with cancer, for more than a decade.

Biggio said he will miss opening day of the season, being on the field with his teammates as well as hearing fans chant "B-I-G-G-I-O," a familiar refrain around Minute Maid Park.

"A final message to my fans? Thank you. Thank you for opening up your living rooms and letting me in your lives for 20 years, and I love you guys."

Biggio Could See Reduced Playing Time

By Robert H. Kelly

In a copyrighted story on
CBS Sportline, it has been reported that Craig Biggio’s playing time could be reduced as manager Phil Garner takes time to evaluate Chris Burke’s performance at second base.

Craig Biggio's playing time could be reduced during the second half of the season, especially on the road, as the Houston Astros give Chris Burke a longer look at second base.

Biggio, who got his 3,000th hit on June 28, is OK with the arrangement, manager Phil Garner said Saturday, adding that the plan could change should Biggio go on a hitting tear. Burke started Saturday at second base and batted leadoff against the Chicago Cubs.

"It's difficult to have the conversation," Garner said, referring to Biggio, his 41-year-old second baseman who is one of the most popular players in Astros history. "And that's why it's subject to change."

Two years removed from a World Series appearance, the Astros began play Saturday with a 39-51 record. Biggio, who has not revealed his plans for after this season, was batting .256 in 81 games. Burke was hitting .235 in 51 games.

"Gar and I are trying to figure out what is going to be best for everybody, what's going on," Biggio said before Saturday's game. "We are going to play in all the games at home, that's a given. And we'll readjust on the road."

Biggio acknowledged he also has fans on the road who want to see him play.

I knew this action could be a possibility after Beeg achieved his 3000th hit. It could be a positive thing as it would give him a chance to rest and thus allow him to be stronger at the plate.

The report, if it indeed occurs, could also turn negative as he still can swing the bat and connect, thought obviously not as strongly as he did in his youth. He is current batting .255, which is 8th on the list for the Astros. His 83 hits this season is third to only Carlos Lee (104) and Hunter Pence (95). The reduction in his playing time could cause hit to lose his edge and not give him enough plate appearances to keep his skills sharp.

Either way, I feel Biggio will continue to hit no matter how many at bats he gets. In a season that had been plagued with pitching problems and inconsistencies at the plate, he joins Lee and Pence as the only Astros who have given fans consistent performances and any reasons to cheer during the Astros substandard season.

June 24: Texas: 3 Hits, 2996 Career Total

By Robert H. Kelly

The Houston Astros faced the
Texas Rangers in the third game of their series in Arlington. The Rangers took the Silver Boot Trophy last night in their victory over the Astros. This will be the final game the Astros and Rangers will play against each other in 2007. The Rangers are 4-1 this season versus the Astros prior to this game.

The Astros went into the game at 31-43, 11 1/2 game behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers, while the Rangers were 30-44, 18 games behind the first place Los Angeles Angels.

Craig Biggio lead off the batting order, playing in the designated hitter role.

He went 3 for 5 at the plate in the Astros 12-9 win, raising his career hit total at 2996. He got two RBIs, one walk and one run. He now has only four hits to go.

Again, for the Nth time this season, is how he did at the plate:

1st inning: SINGLE (facing right handed pitcher
Robinson Tejeda, 5-7, 6.29 ERA)
1: called strike
2: foul
3: singles on a grounder to second baseman
Ian Kinsler.

Hunter Pence.

NOTE #2: Biggio scores on a three run homer by
Lance Berkman. Astros 3 Rangers 0.

3rd inning: POPS OUT (still facing Tejeda)
1: swinging strike
2: pops out, in foul territory, to first baseman
Brad Wilkerson
Current batting average: .234

Current batting average: .234

NOTE #5: Biggio gets an RBI on the walk as Mark Loretta scores.

NOTE #5: Biggio advances to third on an throwing error by third baseman
Ramon Vasquez.

PERSONAL NOTE: The Astros are putting the runs on the board due to Ranger mistakes. Biggio gains one more hit, and by the looks of the next three days, he will get his 3000th hit at home against the Colorado Rockies. I look for him to have a day or two of "rest" in Milwaukee

6th inning: SINGLE (facing left handed pitcher
Ron Mahay, 0-0, 2.82 ERA)
1: ball
2: swinging strike
3: singles on a ground ball to center fielder
Kenny Lofton.

Michael Young to second baseman Ian Kinsler to first baseman Brad Wilkerson
Current batting average: .236

Note #6: When a Ranger hits a home run, the play the theme song from "
The Natural" (the music that is played when Roy Hobbs hit a homer). That is so cool.

Note #7: The Rangers tie the game at 7 all when
Frank Catalanotto hits a two run homer off Dan Wheeler.

Note #8: The Astros score two run in the top of the ninth off a double by Mark Loretta. Astros 9 Texas 7.

Note #9: Astros 9 Texas 8 on a homer run by pinch hitter
Marlon Byrd off of Wheeler. Ian Kinsler hits another home run off Wheeler to tie the game at 9 all in the bottom fo the 9th inning.

My Prediction Day Has Come and is Fixing to Leave

By Robert H. Kelly

Unless the Houston Astros go into mega extra innings tonight, and Craig Biggio goes 10 for 10, my prediction for tonight's game being the venue for his 3000th hit is going to be incorrect.

I have a good idea that the above scenario will not happen. However, I still think there is a small chance he will not get it at home.

Manager Phil Garner can choose to "rest" him on this extended road trip. But the fact that Biggio is hitting the ball pretty well lately, he could get hit 3000th hit against the Rangers.

It would be nice for him to get it in the home stand against the Colorado Rockies.

Either way it will be a tremendous achievement for Biggio and the Astros.

Now if they can add the National League Rookie of the Year Award for Hunter Pence, that might salvage this season for the Astros and their fans.

June 17: Seattle: Biggio Did Not Play

By Chris Price

Craig Biggio took a day off and watched his teammates take down the Seattle Mariners 10-3 in the third game of the three game series.

With Biggio not seeing action today, his career hit total remaidns at 2989, just 11 short of joing the elite list of 3000 career hit players.

Biggio will get at least two and probably three off-days on the road trip. Astros manager Phil Garner usually rests Biggio for day games following a night game, and there are two scheduled on the trip.

While Garner won't hold Biggio out just to ensure he gets the 3,000th hit at home, if resting the 41-year-old infielder makes sense from a team standpoint and dovetails with everyone's desire for Biggio to get No. 3,000 at Minute Maid Park, so be it.

Manager Phil Garner feels he and Biggio will discuss the matter before he makes a decision.

"We obviously would prefer that, and I'm being honest with you that's a piece of the puzzle, but we're doing the same thing we've been doing since Day 1. I sit down with Bidge before the homestand, and I sit down with him when we go on the road and map out what we think is a good plan for him."

We will keep everyone posted on Biggio's place in the starting lineup on this extended road trip.

More Criticism of Craig Biggio

By Robert H. Kelly

The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice wrote an article on his blog concerning the play of Craig Biggio.

He was a bit less critical than the previous writer I posted about. In fact, he questions if he is being unfair to Biggio and the Astros

Unjustified Criticism of Craig Biggio?

By Robert H. Kelly

As I was going through some press releases and reading other writer's columns, I happened upon an interesting piece by Shawn Hartlen writing on covers.com titled
"Big league chew: Stumbling towards immortality"

Below is an excerpt from the article:

Biggio fast becoming unwelcome baggage

Sometime a player hangs around a little too long in order to reach a certain plateau that would assure him of elite status. Friends, say hello to Craig Biggio.

Biggio’s batting average has been in steady decline over the past few years and this year it has been downright embarrassing. Batting at a .219 clip as of today, he is slowly but surely creeping towards the 3000-hit club.

Barring injury Biggio is all but assured to make his goal, however Houston continues to bat him at the top of the order which is a direct correlation to why they are one of the lowest scoring team in the majors.

The Astros managed to get rid of a washed up Jeff Bagwell last year, too bad they didn’t learn from their own lesson.

In some ways, Mr. Hartlen is correct. Biggio is not the player he once was. But name me any player who got long in years in his career and was better than he was at his peak?

Almost everyone can name someone they fell was better at the end of their career then they were in their prime. I don't argue with that fact.

My point is Biggio is working hard towards a goal that will ensure his place in the Hall of Fame.

Are the Astros losing? YES!

Could they be playing better? YES

Could the pitchers be throwing the ball better? YES

Could the batters be getting more hits? YES

So what is the big deal with Biggio and his place on this team? NOTHING, I think.

Biggio achieving 3000 hits with the team he began his career with is a major milestone. He deserves his chance to shine, make the Hall of Fame, and give everyone to feel good about.

His play and quest for 3000 hits is mroe impressive and heartfelt than a certain "drug cheat" who is approaching the Major League Baseball home run record.

After the Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens defection to the New York Yankees, the fans need something to get excited about.

Not only do the fans need this, his fellow Astros need it. The city of Houston needs it. Major League Baseball needs it.

It is certainly a quest that is pure and honest, making us all feel great again, like kids rooting for their favorite players.

That is what this is all about. I guess Mr. Hartlen forgot what it is like to feel good about baseball. After all, baseball needs this after all the negatives it has endured in recent years.

Just some food for thought.
